The SEWP VI OEM–Reseller Dynamic: When to Pursue as a Reseller

Many SEWP VI orders are won by resellers, not OEMs. The decision to pursue as a reseller — and which OEM to align with — is a strategic positioning question, not a sourcing one.

A persistent misconception in SEWP VI is that OEMs hold an inherent advantage. In practice, many orders are won by resellers who hold the category and the reseller authorization for the required products. The decision to pursue as a reseller — and which OEM to align with — is a strategic positioning question that should be settled during capture, not at quote time. Why resellers win

Resellers win when they combine category coverage, competitive pricing against ceiling and discount, and reliable delivery — and when they bring the OEM relationship that the order requires. The OEM authorization is the entry ticket; the reseller's pricing discipline and delivery reliability are the discriminators. An OEM that quotes direct does not always win, because the customer often values the reseller's integration, logistics, and support wrap.

The OEM alignment decision

Which OEM to align with for a given product family is a positioning decision. The considerations: the strength of your authorization (tier, pricing tier, geography), the OEM's market position in the agencies you target, the competitive density of other resellers for the same OEM, and the OEM's willingness to support your pursuit. Aligning with the OEM whose products the agency already buys — verifiable in public order history — positions you where the demand actually is.

Avoid the late alignment

The failure mode is the late OEM alignment: an order arrives, you discover you need a product family you are not authorized for, and you scramble for an OEM relationship under deadline. The OEM you find under pressure is the OEM with the weakest terms and the least support. Align your OEM and reseller authorizations against your target agencies and categories during capture, so the authorization chain is in place before the order lands.

Reseller readiness as a scored input

Reseller and OEM readiness belongs in the pursuit score, not just the sourcing plan. A pursuit engine that captures your OEM relationships and reseller authorizations against your holder profile, and scores reseller readiness as one of the weighted factors, surfaces the orders where your authorization chain is complete and the orders where it is not — before you commit a quote window to an order you cannot source.
