SEWP VI is organized into categories, and each holder is awarded specific categories. Your awarded categories — together with your approved NAICS, technical areas, and OEM relationships — define the universe of orders you can credibly compete. Mapping your award correctly against each incoming order is the first gate in any SEWP pursuit. What the categories represent
SEWP categories group products and product-based services into competitive streams. A category is not a loose label; it constrains which products and services a holder can offer under the vehicle. An order issued against a category you do not hold is generally not an order you can pursue — regardless of how adjacent your capabilities are.
The category-fit gate
When an order arrives, the first question is not "can we do the work" but "is this order in a category we hold, against a technical area we cover, with NAICS we are approved for?" A yes to all three opens the door. A no to any of them is a near-certain disqualifier that no amount of technical brilliance in the quote will fix. Treat category fit as a hard gate.
Technical areas inside categories
Within a category, orders map to technical areas. A holder may be strong in one technical area and weak in another within the same category. Knowing your awarded technical areas — and the depth of your coverage in each — lets you prioritize the orders where you are genuinely competitive rather than the orders that merely look like your work.
OEM and reseller authorization
For product-led orders, the category gate is only the first filter. The second is whether you hold the OEM authorization or reseller relationship required to quote the specific products in the order. A holder with the right category but the wrong OEM relationship is still out. Keeping your OEM and reseller authorizations current against your awarded categories is operational hygiene that pays off at quote time.
